Psychological Assessments

At Rural Psych, we understand it can be hard when you or your child is struggling, and you don't know where to start. An assessment can be an essential first step in clarifying the clinical picture and finding the right support.

Where someone feels they may have a specific diagnosis, such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Specific Learning Disorder or Autism Spectrum Disorder, a comprehensive assessment is generally recommended.

Cognitive Assessment

A Cognitive Assessment, also known as an IQ test or psychometric assessment, helps to determine an individual’s strengths and weaknesses in several cognitive skill areas, including verbal comprehension, visuospatial skills, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed. Book an assessment »

Educational Assessment

An Educational Assessment, also known as an academic assessment, measures how an individual is performing in a range of academic skills in relation to their peers. Educational assessments help psychologists identify a student's strengths and skill levels in reading, writing, mathematics and written expression.  Book an assessment »

Behavioural Assessment

A Behavioural Assessment involves a combination of parent and teacher interviews, observations, and questionnaires, as well as the use of different assessment tools such as behaviour monitoring diaries. The collation of this information helps to clarify and understand an individual's behaviours and emotions. By understanding the causes of a person's distress, those around them are better placed to develop targeted treatment approaches.  Book an assessment »

Functional Capacity Assessment

A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is an assessment of a person's capability across a range of daily activities and environments. It explores how an individual manages everyday tasks, like taking care of themselves and handling things around the house, managing school, work or study and interacting with others. It is an all-around measure of cognitive, social, emotional, and physical functioning in everyday life. A FCA can be used to support NDIS applications and renewals.  Book an assessment »

Comprehensive Assessment

A Comprehensive Assessment is a combination of all of the above. Often, we will interview family members, teachers and capture a complete picture of a person's cognitive, behavioural, psychosocial and your capacity to manage age-appropriate activities of daily living.  Book an assessment »

Referrals for assessment

Schools, General Practitioners, Psychiatrists, and Paediatricians often refer to Rural Psych for assessments to help identify a client's strengths and vulnerabilities and inform the clinical approach. Please note that parent consent is required to submit a referral for a child.

Cost

The complexity of the assessment will determine the fees. Rural Psych approaches each person's needs individually. Where there is financial hardship, funding may be available. Please discuss this with us.

Diagnosis

A Psychologist registered with the Psychology Board of Australia is permitted to diagnose and provide treatment for mental health issues. Rural Psych values a multidisciplinary approach, including collaborating with your GP, psychiatrist, other health professionals, family and teachers where relevant when exploring a potential diagnosis.
